1. The religious people didn’t expect that first Easter.
John 5:17-18
17 In His defense Jesus said to them, “My Father is always at His work to this very day, and I too am working.” 18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill Him; not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
2. The men who buried Jesus didn’t expect that first Easter.
3. The women at Jesus’ crucifixion didn’t expect that first Easter.
Mark 16:1-3
1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus’ body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”
4. Even Jesus’ disciples didn’t expect that first Easter.
John 20:19
On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews...
Mark 9:31
“The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men. They will kill Him, and after three days He will rise.”
5. Nobody expected no body on that first Easter.
Mark 16:4-6
4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. 6 “Don’t be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid Him.”
6. Nobody expected no body on Easter morning – Nobody but Jesus.
Easter is an everyday reality. Easter is where our sin meets our Savior and He forgives us and gives us a new life and a future we can look forward to! Easter is forever! Nobody but Jesus could do that for us. And nobody but Jesus could ever love us that much! Now go and tell somebody!
